Easy & Delicious Homemade Black Bean Burgers

How To Make Homemade Black Bean Burgers
Looking for a budget-friendly, protein-packed meal that’s both delicious and easy to make? These homemade black bean burgers are for you! They’re crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with bold flavors. Plus, they come together in no time with simple pantry staples.
Let’s get cooking!
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
- 2 cans black beans, drained, rinsed, and dried
- 1/2 small red onion, roughly chopped
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (If you don’t have any, check out my recipe to make some quickly at home: https://foreveryourbestie.com/make-homemade-breadcrumbs/ )
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon chile powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Kosher salt & fresh cracked pepper (to taste)
Step 1: Prep Your Beans
For the best texture, you want your black beans dry—not mushy! After rinsing, spread them out on a clean towel or paper towels and pat them dry. If they’re too wet, your burgers might fall apart!
Step 2: Blend the Ingredients

In a food processor (or using a fork for a chunkier texture), combine:
✅ The red onion, garlic, cumin, chile powder, garlic powder, salt & pepper.
✅ Add half of the black beans and pulse until slightly smooth.
✅ Put into a bowl and mix in the remaining black beans for a little extra texture.
Step 3: Mix & Form Patties

To the black bean mixture, stir in:
✅ The egg (helps bind everything together).
✅ The breadcrumbs (for structure and crispiness).
Mix everything until well combined, then shape into 7 equal-sized patties. If the mixture feels too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs!
Step 4: Cook the Burgers
1️⃣ Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
2️⃣ Cook each burger for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
3️⃣ Be gentle when flipping to keep them from breaking!
Step 5: Serve & Enjoy!
These black bean burgers are super versatile! Serve them on a toasted bun with:
🍔 Sliced avocado & chipotle mayo
🥬 Crisp lettuce & juicy tomato
🧀 A slice of melted cheddar or pepper jack
🌶️ Pickled jalapeños for an extra kick
Want to keep it low-carb? Ditch the bun and serve them over a fresh salad or in a lettuce wrap!
