Homemade Black Bean Burgers
Looking for a budget-friendly, protein-packed meal that’s both delicious and easy to make? These homemade black bean burgers are for you!
Prep Time 15 minutes mins
Cook Time 15 minutes mins
- 2 tablespoons olive oil for frying
- 2 cans black beans drained, rinsed, and dried
- 1/2 small red onion roughly chopped
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs If you don’t have any, check out my recipe to make some quickly at home: https://foreveryourbestie.com/make-homemade-breadcrumbs/
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon chile powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Kosher salt & fresh cracked pepper to taste
For the best texture, you want your black beans dry—not mushy! After rinsing, spread them out on a clean towel or paper towels and pat them dry. If they’re too wet, your burgers might fall apart!
Step 2: Blend the Ingredients
In a food processor (or using a fork for a chunkier texture), combine:
The red onion, garlic, cumin, chile powder, garlic powder, salt & pepper.
Put into a bowl and mix in the remaining black beans for a little extra texture.
Step 3: Mix & Form Patties
To the black bean mixture, stir in:
The egg (helps bind everything together).
The breadcrumbs (for structure and crispiness).
Mix everything until well combined, then shape into 7 equal-sized patties. If the mixture feels too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs!
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
Cook each burger for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
Be gentle when flipping to keep them from breaking!
